The city of Izmir is located in the Izmir province of Western Turkey, along the shores of the Aegean Sea. The central region spans 855km2, and it has a total population of 2.6 million, while 3.2 million people inhabit the entire Izmir province. The city is located some 565 km south-west from Istanbul, and 520km west of Turkey’s capital city of Ankara. Izmir is divided into 12 districts for administrative purposes, however all areas are governed by the mayor of Izmir, the districts are Balçova, Bayraklı, Bornova, Buca, Çiğli, Gaziemir, Güzelbahçe, Karabağlar,Karşıyaka, Konak, Menemen, Narlıdere, and Torbalı. Since 1987, Turkey has been an associate of the European Union (EU), but it has not yet become a full member, due to several requirements which have not yet been met by the country.
Despite this Turkey is a member of several other large international organizations, which allow it to trade freely with both the European and Middle-Eastern markets. The current currency used is the Turkish lira (YTL).
